Wallace, Corey - Grade 3

Welcome to my class!

My name is Corey Wallace.  I was born and raised in Redding, California.  In my youth, I was an avid snowboarder.  After high school, I attended UC Davis and earned my BA in History.  Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a seasonal firefighter for the US Forest Service and as a warehouse manager for an eCommerce website.

I have been a teacher since 2009.  My career started teaching English in Seoul, South Korea.  After returning to California, I taught in the City of Oakland for 8 years, including four years teaching 3rd grade.  Summer of 2021, my family and I moved to San Diego.  This previous school year I taught 2nd grade at a charter school in San Diego.  I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to work with your children this year.  I am so excited to get to know all of you and become a part of the EBS community!

As a teacher, my philosophy is to help grow the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally.  I foster a growth mindset in my students, helping them to judge themselves against who they were yesterday, last month, or last year.  I push all students to grow, regardless if they are advanced, on grade level, approaching, or far below benchmark goals.  Conferring, small group teaching, and project-based learning are high leverage areas of teaching in my experience.

In my free time, I love to be active and enjoy the outdoors.  I love the beach, and aspire to continue to improve as a surfer.  Hiking, trail running, and camping are other outdoor activities I love.  I also train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is a foundational piece of my world outlook these days.  Hard work, practice, learning from failure, deferring to the experience of others, not meeting strength with strength, and perseverance are life skills that I bring to my professional life.

Sincerely,

Corey Wallace
